5all around fantastic  Mar 18, 2010
I have had this printer for 3.5 years now. I'm probably jinxing myself by writing this, but I have literally had ZERO problems with it. The "worst" that has happened is about 2 or 3 paper jams in the past 3.5 years. No problems with power supply. Duplex is amazing, printing is super fast.

I guess one caveat is that I use this printer for research and writing purposes, not to print things like graphics or pictures. I print insane amounts of articles and manuscripts and this thing has been a flawless work horse. Can't speak to non-text printing though, really.

I have never loved (or even really liked) a printer before, but I love this one. I give it my highest recommendation.

1I am my Brothers' keeper. Big mistake.  Feb 15, 2010
I bought two of these. I now own two "boat anchors."

From the start, the paper pickup was extremely noisy and sounded like something was on the verge of snapping or breaking. This is because something was on the verge of snapping or breaking. I probably got less than a thousand sheets from the first, less than a hundred for the second. The "paper out" light is perpetually on now, on both units. After powering off and on, one of them will occasionally still print a page or two, then die again.

I just don't have time for the warranty run-around and they will end up on the re-cycling heap. NEVER BY BROTHER. Shoddy, shoddy garbage.

5Brother Network Laser Printer  Feb 05, 2010
Excellent product. Investment, Setup, Networking, Print Quality, Print Speed, Print Cost and Paper Handling are all excellent.

We own three units and will purchase again when the need arises.

I suggest that Netwook printers should be standard for home or office.

1Was too good to be true  Nov 16, 2009
I got this printer back in 2005. For the price ($237.49) it seemed like a bargain. The print quality wasn't great but I needed duplex printing. One year and one month later it didn't survive a cross country move (well packed). Out of warranty, there wasn't any point getting it repaired.

I got the Brother HL-5250DN to replaced a fully functional but antiquated HP LaserJet 4L, which had moved with me many times without incident in the 13 years I owned it.

I replaced the non-functional Brother HL-5250DN with a Xerox Phaser 8550DN. It's not perfect - but it duplexes, it's fast, the print quality is good, and most importantly it works. I hope I can keep it as long as the 4L (3 years and counting).

1Great for a while  Oct 14, 2009
I used an iMac and cheap windows notebook with this printer over a network. It was a home printer, and never printed more than a few dozen pages a week.

It was simple to set up, and worked great (including duplex) for about six months.

Then, it refused to turn on or show any signs of life.

I called brother tech support (which was friendly) only to find that there was no "over the phone" solution. Unfortunately, the one year warranty was from the date of manufacture (December 2007), so it didn't do me any good since I didn't even buy it until January 2009. So, six months into ownership I tried to find an inexpensive fix and the best I could do would cost more than replacing the printer.

It'd be a great printer if it worked, but it failed to do that for me.
